By Nathan Kelly/CKN

Saturday morning in Valencia brought something that had been notoriously long awaited all week. Drivers arrived at the circuit in a heavy downpour and there was no sign of it letting up anytime soon. The positive of this is that mechanics could fully set their karts up for the wet, as the PreFinals were scheduled to begin at 10:50am. Rain fell quite hard for morning warmup sessions and drivers took their time to learn the circuit as best possible in the wet. As the Junior Max class arrived on the pre-grid, the rain began to hit harder.

Championship Saturday at the 2014 Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals in Valencia, Spain was much different for those competing for the Rotax World Titles as heavy rain and miserable conditions created delays, cancellation of the PreFinals and some very soggy Grand Finals.

But when all the mist settled and the races were completed, four new Rotax Grand Finals Champions were crowned. Also, two Canadian drivers stood on the podium as Ben Cooper finished second in Rotax DD2 and Zachary Claman DeMelo was third in Rotax Senior.

After a very long week of action at the Kartodromo International Lucas Guerrero the moment had finally arrived. Championship Saturday at the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals in Valencia, Spain featured a major twist in the plot as heavy rain arrived after a mostly dry event thus far.

RMCGF Saturday Morning Update:

It’s race day here in Valencia, Spain! The day everyone around the world has been working towards for the past twelve months. The chance to compete for a Rotax Grand Finals title.

It’s very wet this morning as the dark clouds have stayed overnight and don’t appear to be going anywhere. 35-45mm of rain is forecasted and is sure to challenge the competitors and throw a wrench into the excellent weeks some are having here in Spain. For others, the rain is a second chance, especially those starting keeping in the field for the PreFinals.

But with all the uncertainty around today, one thing is for certain, four drivers will be crowned Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals world champions by the end of the day and boy is that exciting!

Both the Canadian and American teams were cut down significantly after yesterdays Last Chance Races, but those who survived are strong and competitive.

It’s going to be a great day here in Valencia, and we can’t wait to bring you all the action.

RMCGF Day 5: More Heat Racing and Last Chance Qualifiers

14-11-28-rmcgf

After a dry week of racing, the Last Chance Qualifiers on Friday were run in the wet conditions. (Photo by: Cody Schindel/CKN)

By Nathan Kelly/CKN.

Friday was overcast and rain appeared off in the distance as drivers arrived early in the morning. With karts rebuilt from the prior day of racing, drivers took the to circuit for their respective warm up sessions on damp and cold tarmac. Tired faces walked though out the paddock as teams began to feel the stress and level of intensity of the Rotax Grand Finals. The Rotax Grand Finals is a race like no other Rotax event, the pressure and intensity is at a completely different level than what most drivers are used to. Lack of comfort in your own personal pit space and racing trailer combine with a massive cultural diversity exposes drivers to a unique experience which cannot be replicated. When you calculate the time change and different style of meals, it makes it very difficult for drivers to get in their normal routine as they would in their home countries.

It’s been a very quiet weekend for the Rotax DD2 Masters division in Valencia, Spain. Slightly overshadowed but the three younger and more competitive divisions, the Masters don’t quite get the attention they deserve from those in attendance. But that hasn’t stopped them from putting the gas pedal down and pushing their Praga karts to the limits.

Friday Morning Update: Time to get really serious

For some, today could be the end of the road for their Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals. Today we have the final round of heat races for all classes, plus the last chance races. Only 34 drivers in each category will continue on, six of them from the Last Chance Races which have become known as war zones with drivers doing everything they can to extend their week. Looking up at the sky, it is once again cool and cloudy. Rain is in the forecast for the afternoon which could add even more excitement to the Last Chance Races. Nonetheless, it’s going to be another great day here in Valencia, Spain.

Thursday Morning Update

Since the drivers are limited to one set of tires for the remainder of the event, many opted only a for a handful of laps in morning warm up. Tire conservation will be crucial for the next three days here in Valencia, although it appears that wet weather will arrive Friday and Saturday. Once again it is much cooler today than the first couple of days here in Spain. Heat races will be exciting!

RMCGF Day 3: Intensity Thickens as Official Qualifying Gets Under Way

Wednesday brought a cool morning to Valencia as teams were seen dressed in Canadian winter attire in the morning. As the sun began to shine in the afternoon some of the jackets were put away and temperatures resumed their normal Spanish warmth. The day began with two ten-minute practice sessions for final preparations before qualification began. Overnight rain made for a wet track in the first round of practices as drivers struggled to get quick times and grip. The second practice saw drivers and teams give their final shot at any testing or tuning before the qualification. Practice tires were done after the final practice session and drivers made the transition to their race tires, which they will be required to run for the remainder of the Rotax Grand Finals.

RMCGF Day 2: Engines Roar as Practice Begins

Drivers awoke to the pleasant surprise of a sun filled first day of practice today. The Spanish weather was kind enough to give a full day of brilliant sun and teams took full advantage of the temperatures. A hot circuit did not take long to build up grip levels and drivers were quickly able to gain speed on the technical Spanish circuit.

There were a total of three practice sessions today, two being fifteen minutes and the final only being ten minutes in duration. Drivers and mechanics had to have full focus for each session to make the most of the opportunities to learn the technical track and better their kart setup.
