Nationals Preview: Rotax Senior

For Canadian kart racers there is no bigger week on the schedule than the ASN Canadian National Karting Championships and that week is finally here! Racers from across Canada are making their way to Mosport Kartways near Bowmanville, Ontario to compete for Canada’s ultimate title and the glory of being a National Champion. The week long event on the tricky 1.2KM track will be a true test in all categories where high speeds, deep braking zones and plenty of passing will keep drivers on their toes.

The event officially kicks off on Friday with Pfaff SuperPole Qualifying. From there drivers will race in two heat races and a PreFinal before returning on Sunday to compete in the Canadian Championship Finals. It’s going to be an exciting week and for those who cannot attend, stay tuned to CKN all week long for full event coverage!

To kickoff our coverage of Canada’s premier event, we will break down all ten classes competing this weekend, noting some of the favourites, dark horses and special appearances.

Defending Canadian Champion: Zachary Claman DeMelo (Competing)

The lack of entries in Rotax Senior is made up for this year by a group stacked full of talent. The racing that has been on display so far this season in ECKC competition has been stellar and we expect that to continue this weekend when the boys and girls duke it for the National title.

Zachary Claman DeMelo has stepped out of his European Formula Renault 2.0 car and back into an FA Kart for a chance at defending his title for the third straight year. In his only Canadian start of the season, DeMelo swept the ECKC rounds at ICAR and is primed up for the Canadian Championships.

DeMelo will have his hands full though as fellow ECKC race winners Marco DiLeo, Gianfranco Mazzaferro and Cedrik Lupien will be fast and in the hunt for the SuperPole. Alberta’s Coltin McCaughan has shown great speed at Mosport over the past two years and he can’t be counted out and neither can Taylor Gates, Anthony Tolfa, Marco Signoretti and Kevin Monteith.

The class may not exceed twenty drivers this weekend, which is a shame, but with this much talent, some great racing will surely be on display.
