Back-to-Back National Titles for Gianfranco Mazzaferro in Rotax Junior

Leading from the drop of the green flag, Gianfranco Mazzaferro got the Rotax Junior National Final underway with Alex Lacroix (SH Racing/FA Kart), Clay Van Eerd (CVE/TonyKart) and Roman DeAngelis (Koene/TonyKart) jumping ahead of Cedrik Lupien who started on the front row.

Lacroix went to the lead in corner four on lap two, but overshot his entry and Mazzaferro was able to slide back into the lead. Van Eerd was also passed by DeAngelis at the same time, ultimately falling well back before he regained his rhythm.

Mazzaferro and Lacroix exchanged positions a few times during the race making it a close battle for the lead. However with six laps to go Lacroix made an error allowing DeAngelis to make a pass for second in the turn one. From this point on Mazzaferro would simply drive away in the lead leaving the rest to battle for second.

On the final lap, Lacroix was all over the DeAngelis for second place. Entering into the final corner DeAngelis fell victim to a bump and run by Lacroix with Cedrik Lupien getting by both of them. Lacroix held on for third, but DeAngelis fell to fifth.

Mazzaferro’s win become his third in a row, as he was the Mini-Max Champion in 2012, Junior Champion last year in Goodwood. With his victory, Mazzaferro earned an invitation to join Team Canada at this years Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals in Valencia, Spain.
