CKN ECKC Power Rankings: 2013 Rotax Senior #2

Round three of the 2013 Eastern Canadian Karting Championship hits the track this weekend at the popular Le Monaco de Trois Rivieres in Quebec. The street race is held on the grounds of the GP3R street circuit that one week after kart racers invade the area, will host a car race with the likes of Nascar Canada, F1600, Canadian Touring Car and more. The Coupe du Quebec will run the show on Saturday this weekend with ECKC taking over for Sunday’s event making it only one points scoring race for ECKC competitors.

CKN has racked up the results after round two at Goodwood Kartways and have prepared our second edition of our 2013 ECKC Power Rankings. In some classes there is a major shakeup, while in others things have stayed pretty much the same. Nonetheless, drivers are still rewarded for consistency throughout every race and qualifying session and finishing every race could make or break their ranking.

Here is CKN’s Power Rankings of Rotax Senior drivers and who to watch this weekend.

Ranking +/- Driver Remarks
1 +8 Zachary Claman DeMelo Double-Victory for DeMelo really put his stamp on Goodwood and makes him an immediate threat later this year a the Canadian Championships. He won at Le Monaco last year in Rotax Junior, lets see how he does this weekend in Rotax Senior.
2 +4 Maxime Couturier Couturier placed himself on the podium at Goodwood and he’s been very consistent in 2013 especially in the Finals.
3 0 Steven Szigeti Szigeti holds station in third after Goodwood. Saturday Szigeti seemed a little bit off but on Sunday he just missed the podium while battling with the leaders. He will be one to keep an eye on this weekend in 3R.
4 -2 Olivier Bedard Things were looking really good for Bedard at Goodwood, until a 31st place DNF on Sunday. He will be looking to rebound and recuperate his championship this weekend in Trois-Rivieres.
5 -1 Johnny Flute Flute ran under the radar most of the weekend at Goodwood, although he did manage a sixth in Saturdays Final.
6 -5 Kevin Monteith From the highest of highs in round one, Monteith had quite possibly the worst weekend in his career at Goodwood. Only one session inside the top-ten, Monteith couldn’t seem to get through the first lap in any race all weekend long. He needs two solid finishes to have a chance at the championship.
7 +6 Zacharie Scalzo Scalzo put himself on the charts after a great weekend at Goodwood that saw him never finish lower than fourth including a pole-position on Saturday and earning the second best ranking behind DeMelo. Another good weekend at Le Monaco could make him a championship favourite entering the finale at Mont-Tremblant.
8 -3 Tyler Kashak Kashak struggled big time at Goodwood, with poor qualifying efforts making it challenging to work through the field. He did manage to pass 13 karts in Saturdays prefinal, but that may be the highlight of his weekend.
9 -1 Andrew Palmer rebounding from a DNF on Saturday, Palmer battled for the lead on Sunday but ultimately settled for fifth at the line. He will be absent this weekend as he competes in the US Rotax Grand Nationals.
10 -3 Michael Kundakcioglu What can we say about Michael K? Well, he has a really long and confusing name and he is putting down solid results in 2013. Not quite as good as his weekend at Mosport, but he did get into the top-ten on Sunday.

**Interesting Stat: No driver has managed to finish in the top-ten in all 12 official sessions this season.

Drivers to Watch:

Missing from our Ranking after missing the first round, Pier-Luc Ouellette should be a threat from the moment the karts hit the track at Le Monaco. The championship is wide open as every driver in the top-ten has bad race to use as a drop making this weekend even more important. Artem Korolev, Marc-Andre Levesque, Keiran Oxley and Bryson Schutte are knocking on the doors of the top-ten in our rankings and a solid run on Sunday could see them move up before the Nationals.

**Note: These rankings are the opinions of CanadianKartingNews.com based on the results at 2013 Eastern Canadian Karting Championship races and do not reflect the actual ECKC championship standings. Enjoy.
