Dawson McIntee Racing - Regional Race Report |
|
Moncton, NB – Kart racing is now in high gear after the first rounds of the Atlantic Regional Kart Series concluded at the ¼ mile East Coast Karting track in Dieppe last weekend. Saturday opened the series with race #1 under bright sunny skies, and warm temperatures. After morning practice, we made a few tweaks to the kart and attended the drivers meeting prior to qualifying. AKRS uses a 10 minute qualifying session to determine the starting line-up for the pre-final. Dawson picks up where he left off from last season with a qualifying time of 29.67, a near full second quicker then the rest of the field. With a quick qualifying time, from start to finish, Dawson leads the field in the 12 lap pre-final to the finish. The 15 lap Final, also known as the trophy round, mirrors the pre-final results and Dawson takes his first win of the 2009 season.
Race #1 Results 1. #19 Dawson McIntee 2. #21 Buddie Munn 3. #55 Mackenzie Brewer 4. #13 Connon Walker 5. #88 Cameron Nickerson
Sunday opens race #2 of the regional series with a change in the weather to cloudy, cool and a passing shower that shorten morning practice. With the threat of a complete down pour, series Directors make the decision to move up qualifying and run through the races trying to beat Mother Nature. With one Practice under our belt we completed our 10 minute qualifier on top of the leader board. Our Pre- Final was similar to yesterday with Dawson leading all of the laps to the finish. However, he may have won the 12 lap Pre-Final race but we lost against Mother Nature as the skies opened up and soaked the track.
The race was called by the Race Director as a “wet race” allowing us to switch to rain tires.
As we lined up on pit road the skies opened once again. With limited experience racing in the rain, it was anyone’s race. With the rain pouring down and the green flag out, the field barrels down into turn, but this time at a much slower speed then what they had been racing at all weekend. The next lap proved to be a testing of kart limits as Dawson leading looses control of his kart and slides off the track. As the whole field drives past him, he manages to get his kart back on the track and begins to chase down the field. Dawson catches up passing 3rd and 4th place karts only to loose control again. He does a 360 degree spin but keeps it on the track and luckily loses only one of his gained positions.
With the limits now tested on how fast he can go in the rain, Dawson once again works at picking off one kart at a time. Now with 4 laps to go Dawson has worked his way behind the leader Buddie Munn. He calculates his move on the outside going down the back straight which now a drag race has developed heading into the hairpin. With a late breaking move, Dawson is able to clear the leader and drive off to this second win of the weekend.
